Foreword

"Teacher, I got 85 on TOEFL. Is that enough?"

The answer to this question depends on which schools you are applying to.

If you are targeting Harvard or Stanford, 85 is definitely not enough. But if you are applying to schools ranked 50-100, 85 may meet the requirement.

Language proficiency scores are the "threshold" for study abroad applications. If you fail to meet the minimum requirement, your application may not even get a review. However, meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee admission either, as the actual average admitted scores of many schools are far higher than the published minimum.

Today I will help you figure out: What exactly are the language score requirements of different universities? How should you prepare for the tests?

---

1. TOEFL vs IELTS: Which one should you choose?

My suggestion: If you are comfortable speaking to a computer, choose TOEFL; if you prefer interacting with people, choose IELTS. Both exams are recognized by US universities, and neither is superior to the other.
